Status & Distribution - 2018 Species Range Maps

This listing contains every species for which there exists an accepted record for the state of Virginia. In order to compile this list, eBird and The Raven (the official journal of the Virginia Society of Ornithology), specifically the annual VARCOM reports, were searched in full. Review & acceptance has been completed by the regional reviewers of eBird and/or the Virginia Avian Records Committee (VARCOM). In going through all these records, I created a system for assigning each species a particular 'Filter Code', which is reflective of how eBird treats a particular species if submitted by a user. Code 1 species (purple) are accepted on a year-round basis (permanent residents) as long as the counts are within acceptable ranges. The acceptable count fluctuates depending on the season, but these species have records during the full calendar year in Virginia Beach. Code 2 species (blue or red) are those that spend a full season (winter or summer residents) in the county; they may be present in higher numbers during transitional months, but at least some individuals remain until the next transitional period. These species are accepted into eBird during one date range (fall to spring or spring to fall) as long as the submission falls within accepted counts. Code 3 species (yellow) are those that pass through our region while migrating between wintering & breeding grounds (transients). These species are given two short duration windows (or in some cases, just one) in eBird where they are accepted, as long as the submission falls within accepted counts. Code 4 (green) represents species that hold a zero-count year-round, and will require review & acceptance by eBird anytime they are submitted on a checklist (rarities). Lastly, Code 5 species are those that have been accepted in Virginia, but not in Virginia Beach. These species are not included on the filter, but any observation will require the addition of the species to the official list & eBird filter. The colors have been selected to mirror typical field guide range maps to make viewing this table easy to interpret. A simplified version of the Filter Codes are explained below. (Revised Mar 2018)
