Status & Distribution - Noteworthy Observations

The intent of this listing is to provide up-to-date information on all the 'noteworthy' species that are being observed within Virginia Beach. The term 'noteworthy' isn't specifically defined but I try to include primarily species that are A). not annually reported in the city, B). annually reported but in very low numbers (i.e., Iceland Gull or Eurasian Wigeon which at this point are expected to occur but still of interest), or C). unseasonal occurrences (i.e., wintering warblers, summering ducks, etc.). All hyperlinks take you directly to eBird reports where more information is likely to have been logged by the user (such as a more refined location or description of how to observe the rarity). If you'd like to open these links in a new tab, just click your mouse's roll-wheel over the links (continue clicking on separate links and each will load in its own browser tab for viewing). To search this page for a species, hit CTRL+F, then start typing the species name it your browser should jump to the information you're seeking. Often times, information is passed to me via Facebook, text message, or phone calls and I try to keep this updated whenever I'm available to input the data. Please check back frequently.

[Though this individual was first reported 13 Nov 2016, it is likely that is has been present at the location and simply overlooked since there has been a group of 4 juvenile White-crowned Sparrows present since at least 29 Oct 2016 in the field to the northeast of the visitor contact station parking area. Greater White-fronted Goose (Chen rossii): 1-16, Sherwood Lakes Neighborhood (North Pond), 4 Dec 2015-6 Jan 2017 (obs. Julian Smith); a peak count of 16 was observed 6 Jan 2017. [For the first 2 weeks, just a single individual was observed moving around with a Ross’s Goose among the wintering Canada Goose flock between the neighborhood’s north pond, the adjacent fields along Princess Anne Road and Princess Anne Lane, a large agricultural field off of Firefall Drive to the northeast (first observed 8 Dec at this site, obs. James Marcum) and a nearby stormwater management pond surrounded by private residences on Haviland Drive (first logged at this site 13 Dec, ph. Ryan Graves). On the morning of 18 Dec a group of 13 individuals was observed on the fields south of Sherwood Lakes and continued in and around the lake until reports came to a halt. Eventually a peak high count of 16 was reported, though the most ever documented in a single photograph was 13. See photographs taken by Mary Catherine Miguez. No individuals were observed beyond the first snowstorm of the winter which occurred 7 Jan 2017, with snow persisting on the ground for several days after due to continuing sub-freezing temperatures.
