Status & Distribution - Notable Observations Criteria

When & where a species is considered to be unusual, rare, notable, or any comparable term is the subject of considerable debate among birders. This table offers an explanation of when &/or where I would personally consider a given species to be notable within Virginia Beach. The dates provided here are based on the 10-year average arrival/departure dates (2016–2025) with a half-month buffer built around them. For example, over the 10 most recent fall seasons, Snow Goose has yielded an average first arrival report of 30 Oct, so for a regularly-occurring species like this, a notable arrival report would have to occur on 15 Oct or earlier. Some species are simply not expected to be found in certain portions of the city, such as seabirds on inland waterways (a Northern Gannet at Stumpy Lake sure would be exciting). Please know that no one could ever truly define what is & what isn’t notable, as the impression of notability will change from birder to birder. This is simply an attempt to showcase what records would fall outside the expected “norms” in a given year for each species.
